ISRAEL TUPPER (1744–1817), son of SAMUEL TUPPER and HANNAH FISH
DEBORAH TOBEY (bp. 1751–1833), probably daughter of JONATHAN TOBEY and DEBORAH SWIFT
Israel, the son of Samuel Tupper and Hannah Fish, was born on 9 May 1744 in Sandwich.1,2 He died on 3 March 1817 in Barnard and is buried in the Barnard Village Cemetery.2,4 He married Deborah Tobey on 24 November 1770.2
Who was Deborah Tobey? The Tupper Family Association asserts that she was the daughter of Deacon Joshua Tobey and Maria Tobey of Mattapoisett. However, Deborah, the daughter of Joshua and Maria, was baptized with her siblings on 6 September 1772 in Sandwich, almost two years after Israel and Deborah married. Given that Deborah was married in 1770, it is likely that she was born by 1754. Given that she had her last child in 1793 it is likely that she was born after 1748. The only Deborah Tobeys, born in Massachusetts between 1748 and 1754, that I can find are the Deborah, daughter of Jonathan and Deborah, baptized on 30 June 1751 in Sandwich and the Deborah, daughter of Elisha and Desire, baptized with her brother Lemuel on 5 July 1752 in Dartmouth. A Dartmouth record says that Deborah and Silas Swift of Dartmouth published their intention to wed on 17 December 1765. This Deborah is surely the Deborah of Dartmouth. In his will, this Deborah's father names her first of his children, suggesting that she might have been at least a couple of years old when she was baptized, and he refers to her as Deborah Swift. Thus, it appears likely that our Deborah is the daughter of Jonathan Tobey and his wife Deborah Swift. Deborah's death record suggests that she was born in 1747, but this is likely imperfectly accurate.3 The unusual first name of Deborah's first child might be in honor of Deborah's grandmother Remember Perry.
Deborah Tobey was baptized on 30 June 1751 in Sandwich.1 Deborah, the wife of Israel, died on 5 September 1833, age 86, in Barnard.4
Israel was a school teacher.2 Family legend has it that he moved to Barnard to prevent his sons from becoming sea-faring men.2
Israel came to Barnard about 1789. On 3 August 1789 Israel bought the western half of lot number 272 of 50 acres. On 30 November 1796 he bought the eastern half. Shortly before his death he conveyed the entire lot to his son Edumd.5
Israel appears in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 censuses for Barnard.6
